Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar (adjust for sweetness)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm coconut milk (or regular milk if preferred)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 egg (optional for brushing)
Instructions
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, mix the warm water with the sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and stir until dissolved. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes foamy. This step is important to ensure the yeast is active.
Step 2: Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Mix well to ensure an even distribution.
Step 3: Add Wet Ingredients
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the activated yeast mixture, warm coconut milk, butter, and vegetable oil. Mix until the dough begins to come together.
Step 4: Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour. Be careful not to add too much, as this can make the bread tough.
Step 5: Let the Dough Rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size. The warmth and humidity are essential for the dough to rise properly.
Step 6: Shape the Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into small, even portions and roll each piece into a ball. Use a rolling pin to flatten each ball into an oval shape.
Step 7: Brush with Egg Wash and Bake
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). If desired, brush the tops of the dough ovals with a light egg wash for a golden finish. Place the dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
