Ingredients
Scale
-
4 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji work well)
-
1 cup all-purpose flour
-
1/4 cup cornstarch
-
1 teaspoon baking powder
-
1/2 teaspoon salt
-
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
-
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
-
1/2 cup milk
-
1 large egg
-
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-
1/4 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
-
Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Apples
- Wash and dry the apples thoroughly.
- Core the apples using a sharp knife or apple corer.
- Slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick rings.
Step 2: Make the Batter
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, whisking until smooth.
Step 3: Heat the Oil
- Pour vegetable oil into a deep frying pan or skillet, filling it about 1 inch deep.
- Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
Step 4: Coat and Fry the Apple Rings
- Dip each apple ring into the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated.
- Carefully place the coated rings into the hot oil, frying 2-3 at a time to avoid overcrowding.
- Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the rings and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Step 5: Coat with Sugar
- While the rings are still warm, sprinkle them with granulated sugar or dip them in a cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
