Ingredients
-
2 pounds (about 4-5 medium) Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes (peeled and cubed)
-
6 cloves garlic (minced or pressed)
-
1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
-
1 cup whole milk or heavy cream (warmed)
-
1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
-
1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
-
1/4 cup sour cream or cream cheese (optional, for extra creaminess)
-
Fresh chives or parsley (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized cubes (about 1-2 inches). This ensures they cook evenly.
- Rinse the potato cubes under cold water to remove excess starch.
Step 2: Boil the Potatoes
- Place the potato cubes in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a pinch of salt to the water.
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
Step 3: Cook the Garlic
- While the potatoes are boiling, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as it can turn bitter.
Step 4: Mash the Potatoes
- Drain the cooked potatoes in a colander and return them to the pot or a mixing bowl.
- Use a potato masher or ricer to mash the potatoes until smooth.
Step 5: Combine Ingredients
- Add the remaining butter, sautéed garlic, warm milk (or cream), salt, and pepper to the mashed potatoes.
- Mix everything together until the potatoes are creamy and well-combined. For extra richness, stir in sour cream or cream cheese.
