For the Meat Sauce:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef

  • 1 lb (450g) Italian sausage (optional)

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

  • 2 cans (6 oz each) tomato paste

  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)

  • 2 tsp sugar

  • 2 tsp dried basil

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Cheese Mixture:

  • 15 oz (425g) ricotta cheese

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For Layering:

  • 12 lasagna noodles (oven-ready or boiled)

  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese


Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Sauce

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onions and garlic, sauté until fragrant (2-3 minutes).
  3. Add ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking it into small pieces. Cook until browned.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, red wine (if using), sugar, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  5. Simmer the sauce for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 2: Prepare the Cheese Mixture

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, grated Parmesan, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth.

Step 3: Cook the Lasagna Noodles

  1. If not using oven-ready noodles, boil lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Step 4: Assemble the Lasagna

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread 1 cup of meat sauce at the bottom of the baking dish.
  3. Layer 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  4. Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by 1 cup of meat sauce and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.
  5. Repeat the layers twice, ending with a final layer of noodles, meat sauce, and a generous topping of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Step 5: Bake the Lasagna

  1. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  2. Bake for 25 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  3. Let the lasagna rest for 15 minutes before serving.
