Ingredients
Main Ingredients:
-
4 slices of thick-cut bread (sourdough, brioche, or Texas toast)
-
1 ½ cups shredded sharp white cheddar cheese (or a mix with Gruyère for extra melt)
-
3 tbsp unsalted butter (or mayonnaise for extra crispiness)
-
1 tsp garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)
-
½ tsp black pepper
Optional Add-Ins:
-
1 tbsp cream cheese (for extra creaminess)
-
2 slices crispy bacon (for a smoky twist)
-
1 tsp Dijon mustard (for tanginess)
-
Fresh herbs (thyme or parsley for garnish)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cheese
-
Shred the white cheddar cheese (avoid pre-shredded—it has anti-caking agents that reduce meltiness).
-
For extra creaminess, mix in 1 tbsp of cream cheese.
Step 2: Butter the Bread
-
Spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice (or use mayonnaise for deeper browning).
-
Sprinkle garlic powder & black pepper for extra flavor.
Step 3: Assemble the Sandwich
-
Place one slice of bread (buttered side down) in a cold skillet.
-
Add a generous layer of shredded white cheddar (about ¾ cup).
-
Top with the second slice (buttered side up).
Step 4: Cook on Low Heat
-
Heat the skillet on medium-low (to melt cheese without burning bread).
-
Cover with a lid for 2 minutes (helps cheese melt faster).
-
Flip when the bottom is golden brown (about 3-4 minutes).
Step 5: Crisp to Perfection
-
Press lightly with a spatula for even browning.
-
Cook the second side for 2-3 minutes until crispy.
-
Remove, let rest 1 minute, then slice and serve!
