Ingredients
- 1 cup long-grain white rice (uncooked)
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
- 1 can (10.5 oz) beef broth (or vegetable broth for a vegetarian version)
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced (optional for added texture)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for sautéing onions, optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh parsley or thyme, for garnish (optional)
- Shredded cheese (Swiss, Gruyère, or mozzarella – optional for a cheesy twist)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat and Prepare
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease your baking dish lightly with butter or a small amount of oil to prevent sticking.
Step 2: Optional – Sauté Onions
While the canned French onion soup already provides great flavor, you can enhance it by sautéing fresh onions.
Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and sauté until caramelized and golden brown, about 10–12 minutes. This step adds extra depth and texture.
Step 3: Combine Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, combine the uncooked rice, French onion soup, beef broth, and the sautéed onions (if using). Season with a pinch of salt and black pepper to taste. Mix well to ensure the rice is evenly coated.
Step 4: Pour and Dot with Butter
Pour the mixture into the greased baking dish. Dot the top evenly with cubes of unsalted butter. This helps the rice stay moist and enhances its richness.
Step 5: Cover and Bake
Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked and tender. If you like a slightly crispy top, remove the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
Step 6: Optional – Add Cheese
For a cheesy French onion rice, sprinkle your choice of shredded cheese over the top in the last few minutes of baking and return it to the oven until melted and bubbly.
Step 7: Garnish and Serve
Remove from the oven and let the rice rest for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and garnish with chopped parsley or thyme before serving.
