Ingredients
Scale
- 4–5 large ripe tomatoes (preferably heirloom or vine-ripened)
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, torn or chopped
- 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar (or red wine vinegar)
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional, for added depth)
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, cubed (optional, for a Caprese-style twist)
- 1 tablespoon capers (optional, for a briny flavor)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Tomatoes
- Wash the tomatoes thoroughly and pat them dry. Slice them into wedges or thick rounds, depending on your preference. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
Step 2: Slice the Red Onion
- Peel the red onion and slice it thinly. Add the slices to the bowl with the tomatoes.
Step 3: Make the Dressing
- In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic, Dijon mustard (if using), salt, and pepper. Adjust the seasoning to taste.
Step 4: Combine the Ingredients
- Pour the dressing over the tomatoes and onions. Gently toss to coat everything evenly.
Step 5: Add Fresh Basil and Optional Ingredients
- Tear or chop the fresh basil leaves and add them to the salad. If using mozzarella or capers, add them at this stage.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
- Transfer the salad to a serving platter or bowl. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Serve fresh and enjoy!
