Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter (or a combination of both)
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (optional for richness)
- 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 8 oz (225g) cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
- 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic (minced or finely chopped)
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or ½ teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar or soy sauce (optional for depth of flavor)
- Chopped parsley (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prep Your Ingredients
Clean mushrooms with a damp paper towel or gently rinse and dry. Slice mushrooms and onions thinly and uniformly to ensure even cooking. Mince garlic and have other ingredients ready before heating the pan.
Step 2: Heat the Skillet
Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add olive oil or butter. Once the oil shimmers or the butter is melted and slightly bubbling, it’s time to cook.
Step 3: Cook the Onions
Add the sliced onions to the skillet. Sauté for about 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onions become translucent and slightly golden. For extra sweetness, you can cook them a bit longer.
Step 4: Add the Mushrooms
Add sliced mushrooms to the skillet with the onions. Spread them out evenly. Let them sit for a minute or two without stirring to allow them to brown nicely. Stir occasionally and cook for 7-10 minutes until mushrooms are tender and golden.
Step 5: Season and Add Extras
Add garlic, salt, pepper, and optional thyme. Stir well. After 1-2 minutes, add balsamic vinegar or soy sauce for added depth. Let it cook for another 1-2 minutes until everything is well coated and fragrant. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.
