Ingredients
- ½ cup popcorn kernels – Use fresh, high-quality kernels for the best results.
- ¼ cup granulated sugar – White sugar is traditional, but you can try brown sugar for deeper flavor.
- ¼ cup vegetable oil – Canola or coconut oil also work well.
- 1 tsp salt – Adjust to taste for that perfect sweet and salty balance.
Instructions
Step 1: 🍳 Heat the Oil
Start by heating the oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Add 3-4 popcorn kernels to the oil and cover the pot. These test kernels will let you know when the oil is hot enough.
Step 2: 🍿 Add the Kernels and Sugar
Once the test kernels pop, remove them with a spoon. Quickly add the ½ cup popcorn kernels and ¼ cup sugar to the pot. Stir well to evenly coat the kernels with the sugary oil mixture.
Step 3: 🥄 Shake It Up
Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and start shaking it over the burner. Use oven mitts and hold the handles tightly. Shake the pot every 3–5 seconds to keep the sugar from burning and ensure even popping.
Step 4: 🔥 Listen Closely
As the popcorn starts popping, continue to shake gently and listen for the sound to slow down. When there’s about 2–3 seconds between pops, remove the pot from heat immediately to prevent burning.
Step 5: 🧂 Season and Serve
Quickly transfer the popcorn to a large bowl. Sprinkle salt over the top and toss with a spatula or shake the bowl to coat evenly. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving—hot sugar can burn!
